The Freedom Forum's highest honor, and is accompanied by an award of $100,000 to his family who share and sustain his vision. Here are two quotes that measure the man: "Robert C. Maynard's work as a champion of equality in news staffs and news columns made him the ideal selection for The Freedom Forum's Free Spirit Award."
Allen H. Neuharth "Bob Maynard was the newsroom's free spirit. He was a model innovator and energizer; a protector and practitioner of free press, free speech and free spirit." John C. Quinn Bob Maynard, born to an immigrant family, was named a Nieman Fellow at Harvard at age 28. He went on to become the first African-American to own a major daily newspaper, The Oakland Tribune. "This country cannot be the country we want it to be if its story is told by only one group of citizens." This quotation, from his last public appearance before an audience of college journalism students, embodies his code and commitment to his peers and countless young journalists in whom his free spirit lives on. |
