'Maynard Journal' to address the most pressing questions facing the industry
These are exciting times for the Maynard Institute, and for the journalism profession.
This week, the Maynard Institute launches its printed quarterly newsletter, the Maynard Journal. We will provide valuable insight on efforts to increase diversity in the newsrooms and front offices of newspapers across the country, and articulate our views on a wide range of issues of importance to journalists today. We will not shy away from controversy; rather, we will forcefully address the most pressing questions in the industry.
In every issue, you will find a profile of a journalist who has passed through the Maynard Institute and left a mark on journalism. Our interview column, “Hot Seat,’’ will bring you a Q&A with one of the stalwarts in the industry. Our initial interviewee is Tony Ridder, CEO of the Knight Ridder newspaper chain.
We also will feature stories on the people, issues and programs that help better our profession. We will unveil the programs that make up the new Maynard Institute. The Maynard Journal is just one of many innovations we will unfold in the weeks and months ahead. For more information about these offerings, visit our Unity programs page.
Our goal is to offer training and preparation to journalists and business aspirants so that the newsrooms and publishing offices of newspapers look like the communities their publications serve. We will need your help. Together, we can accomplish this objective my father, Robert C. Maynard, set out to make a reality so many years ago.
If he were with us today, I know he would be pleased at the sight of thousands of journalists of all colors, and all walks of life, gathering for the UNITY Convention. While we plot strategies to impact the future, we must also pause and reflect on the fact that the work of such crusaders like Bob Maynard, Vernon Jarrett and Frank del Olmo continues on. We are what they helped to produce. And we will carry on their fight until we are successful.
