Listening to Other Voices Posted by Victoria on Mar 06, 2007 I agree with the writer that we should not disdain that which we disagree; yet, I question why she would want to put the onus of the public outrage solely at the foot of Blacks. Many whites, Asians, Native Americans, Muslims, Hispanics, Latinos, etc., were offended by Eng. Regardless of the need to hear all voices, his column was hated-filled and offensive. Anyone with even an ounce of education knows that what Eng wrote -- borders on poppycock and hyperbole -- is his own experience -- presents an extremely narrow view of an enormous population -- points to his own racial biases (he claims all whites defend blacks - how silly) -- reflects incredibly poor journalism. What Eng wrote is no different than what this country's mainstream media printed in the early, mid and late 1800s. New York dailies proclaimed that the "negroes" and "redskins" were created only to serve whites. That these people were inferior. While hate speech is to be tolerated - as everyone is entitled to their own opinion - any writer of stature, character and with even a modicom of literary sense would never want such trash among their clips. Eng is but a pathetic soul, lost in his own anger, insecurities and whatever else is ailing him. I pray for him.
