OAKLAND, Calif., (August 16, 2002) - Tickets are now on sale for the Maynard Institute’s 25th anniversary gala. The event is September 25, 2002, at the Waldorf=Astoria in New York City.
For a quarter of a century, the Maynard Institute has prepared journalists of all races to lead the news industry in an increasingly diverse society. Just consider the numbers: Some 700 reporters, editors, and executives have graduated from MIJE programs and are working at newspapers and television stations across the nation. Another 700 people have gone through MIJE certificate programs such as Cross-Media or Fault Lines, making Maynard the nation’s largest provider of training for journalists of color in the country.
But the challenge remains as important today as when the institute was founded in 1973.
The news media neither reflects of all America in its workforce nor in its representation of the nation. "This country cannot be the country we want it to be if its story is told by only one group of citizens," the late Robert C. Maynard once said. "Our goal is to give all Americans front-door access to the truth."
The celebration will include a tribute to Bob Maynard, reflections from MIJE graduates, and a few hopeful words about the kind of country we still want America to be.
Entertainment will include visits – and debates – from characters in American history.
Cocktails will be served at 6 p.m. And the dinner and program start at 7. Tickets are for sale on Maynard’s web site for $350.00 each.
"This is a great chance for all Maynard’s alumni to get together, share memories, and help open the door for the next generation of news leaders," says Maynard Chairman Mark N. Trahant. "So many of our scholars tell us, over and over, what a Maynard summer meant to their career. Now here’s a fun way of saying ‘thank you’ and sharing those good times again."
The gala event co-chairs are New York Times Chairman Arthur Sulzberger, Jr. and USA TODAY and Freedom Forum founder Allen H. Neuharth.
