This workbook was created a decade ago in conjunction with the Robert C. Maynard Institute for Journalism Education’s Total Community Coverage program.

Total Community Coverage is a comprehensive set of services and advanced training designed to increase the diversity of voices and images in the newspaper.

The book was written and edited by Eric Newton, managing editor of the Oakland Tribune from 1990 to 1992, and Charles Jackson, metro editor with Newton, who later went on to edit the Tribune after its purchase by MediaNews.

Robert C. Maynard died in 1993, but not before becoming, along with his wife Nancy Hicks Maynard, the first African-Americans to own a major mainstream metropolitan newspaper. Under their ownership, from 1983-1992, the Oakland Tribune won hundreds of professional awards, including the Pulitzer Prize, with one of the most diverse newsrooms in America.

Because the original of this booklet was written in the early 1990s, some of the facts and figures are dated. But what is striking is that its warning of coming problems in the industry -- nearly 20 years ago -- came to pass. We can only wonder what America's newspapers would look like today had Bob Maynard's vision of The Open Newspaper been adopted by major papers in the resource-rich days of decades past.
