Elizabeth Anderson
Elizabeth Anderson is assistant news editor at the Greenville (S.C.) News. Before joining the paper in 2002 as a copy editor, she was senior writer for graduate publications in the University of California-Berkeley's Graduate Division. She also has worked as a communications writer for the Graduate Theological Union in Berkeley and was a reporter for the biweekly Brentwood (Calif.) News. Elizabeth has a master's degree in journalism from the UC-Berkeley Graduate School of Journalism and a bachelor's degree in English from Stanford University. She lives in Spartanburg, S.C., with her husband and year-old son.
Karen Burkett
Karen Burkett joined the multimedia department at the Miami Herald in September. She was born in Jamaica and raised in Miami, Fla. She twice left her hometown: first to attend college and then to live and work in Atlanta and New York as a television news producer. It took living in those great American cities for Karen to realize she yearned most for island flavor, family and community. Journalism has been her passport to everything from corporate life at the headquarters of NBC News to the personal scenes of crisis and chaos after hurricanes Andrew and Wilma. It allowed her to travel and it brought her home.
Chris Cobler
Chris Cobler, a 2005-06 Nieman Fellow at Harvard University, is on leave from the Greeley (Co.) Tribune, where he has been editor since 1995. During that time, the Tribune has won dozens of national awards, including the Robert McGruder Award for Diversity Leadership, the Associated Press Managing Editors International Perspective Award, the National Association of Hispanic Journalists Public Service Reporting Award and the National Newspaper Association's Best Community Newspaper Award. Chris previously worked for a variety of newspapers: He has been managing editor of the Denton (Texas) Record-Chronicle; city editor, news editor and assistant managing editor of the Fort Collins Coloradoan; assistant city editor of the Sioux Falls (S.D.) Argus Leader; and a reporter at the Colorado Springs Gazette-Telegraph.
Jennifer Conklin
Jennifer Conklin is the presentation editor at the Herald in Bradenton, Fla. She has spent all of her eight-year journalism career with Knight Ridder. She is a member of the Asian American Journalists Association and a graduate of the Executive Leadership Program. She leads a staff of graphic artists and designers in crafting the presentation vision for the Herald. After graduating from the University of Kansas with a bachelor's degree in newspaper editorial and magazine design, Jennifer began her career at the State in Columbia, S.C., as a designer and ballet reviewer. Prior to her current position, she designed the front page and Sunday business front at the Charlotte (N.C.) Observer, where she also taught a weekly high school journalism class.
Hipolito Corella
Hipolito ("Poli") Corella was named metro editor of the Arizona Daily Star in July. He oversees news coverage of the Tucson metro area. A native of Tucson, he worked as a reporter for Maynard's Editing Program for Minority Journalists while a sophomore at the University of Arizona and landed a summer internship at the Albuquerque Tribune before graduating in 1990. Poli has worked at the Star since late 1991 and held several reporting beats, including police, courts, Pima County government, education and local politics. He became an assistant metro editor in 2002 and last January was named regional editor, overseeing the daily Neighbors pages and the paper's three weekly zoned publications. He and his wife, Monica, have two children: Emilio, 12, and Catina, 8.
Todd C. Duncan
Todd C. Duncan is the North Fulton bureau chief for the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. He has been with the AJC for more than 13 years. A New York City native, Todd has worked in the newspaper industry for more than 22 years and has held many positions, including reporter, page designer and copy editor. Todd is a resident of Sandy Springs, Ga., and has a 13-year-old daughter.
Christine Elston
Christine Elston is circulation sales and marketing manager for the Wichita Eagle. Her areas of responsibility include acquisition marketing, customer service, retention, Newspapers in Education, single-copy marketing and retention, and managing a staff of eight. She returned to the Eagle this year after spending two years in Seattle. She previously worked for the newspaper in retail advertising and marketing for five years. Prior to moving to the Northwest she was in public relations and account service at a local advertising agency, including working with the Wichita Eagle account. A native Kansan and a graduate of Wichita State University, Christine is married with two teenage boys.
Gina Falcone-Rupp
Gina Falcone-Rupp is the executive producer in the McClatchy Interactive Newsroom, where she oversees production of national and international news and sports for McClatchy affiliate sites as well as planning and implementation of multimedia projects. A graduate of North Carolina State University, Gina began her career in 1993 doing paste-up at the News & Observer in Raleigh, N.C., and writing for sports and features. She moved to online journalism with NandO.net (now McClatchy Interactive) in 1995, where she was a copy editor, sports columnist and reporter before becoming a senior producer in 2004. Gina attended the NAA Future Leaders seminar in March. She enjoys spending time with her family and playing soccer and floorball. She was a member of the 2003 U.S. women's national floorball team.
Joaquin Fernandez
Joaquin Fernandez, a freelance video producer, was born in Miami, Fla., and grew up in the Dominican Republic. He has worked in advertising and communications since he graduated from college. Most of his professional years have been spent working for ad agencies, plus a six-year employment at a state university in South Florida. Joaquin has been a graphic designer, art director, project manager, creative director and department manager. He has been able to work as a freelance video producer for the past 10 years, a passion that has taken him literally around the world. He lives in Columbia, S.C., with his wife and four children.
Patrick Gonzales
Patrick Gonzales is sports editor at the Lubbock (Texas) Avalanche-Journal. He began his career in 2000 at the Abilene Reporter-News, where he was a sports writer for two years. He then moved to the Lubbock A-J, where he was a sports writer for a year before being promoted to sports editor. He was the first Hispanic sports editor in the newspaper's 84-year history. He received his bachelor of arts degree in print journalism with a minor in Spanish from Texas Tech University in 2000. A native of Slaton, Texas, Patrick has been awarded three Texas Associated Press Managing Editors awards in feature writing. He plans to marry his high school sweetheart, Rita, in May.
Harold Goodridge
Harold Goodridge has been city editor of the Stevens Point Journal, in central Wisconsin, since October 2004. He previously worked for five years at the Laurel Leader, a weekly in Maryland just outside of Washington, D.C. He covered city government, crime, courts and business. He also wrote columns and won a first-place award for column writing from the Maryland-Delaware-D.C. Press Association in 2003. Harold, who was born and raised in Springfield, Mass., studied mass communications and journalism at Norfolk (Va.) State University. After graduating, his first full-time reporting job was at the Centre Daily Times in central Pennsylvania, where he covered county government, crime and courts.
Sherry Melissa Hanna
Sherry Melissa Hanna is assistant news editor at the Athens (Ga.) Banner-Herald. A native of North Augusta, S.C., she graduated from the University of South Carolina-Aiken in 2000 with a bachelor's degree in communications while working at the Aiken Standard newspaper. After joining the staff at the Aiken Standard in 1998, Melissa worked as a reporter and editor and later served as news editor before joining the Banner-Herald in 2003.
Kendra Johnson
Kendra Johnson is the assistant news editor on the copy desk at the Ledger in Lakeland, Fla., where she has been a copy editor since June 2004. She began her journalism career as a reporter at the Patriot Ledger in Quincy, Mass., after graduating from Boston University with a degree in print journalism. Covering several small towns kept her busy for four years, and then she joined the world of book publishing. She spent two years as an editorial assistant in the college division at Houghton Mifflin in Boston before moving to Florida and returning to journalism. Kendra is an ASNE/APME Fellow and a member of the Ledger's readership initiative committee.
James Kwasnik
James Kwasnik is the online editor at the Asbury Park Press in New Jersey, where he has overseen or participated in numerous online initiatives including creating a searchable calendar database with reverse publishing, and redesigning or designing Web sites. He also implemented a new content management system that created an all-inclusive Jersey Shore vacation site. Previously, James was a section editor in features. He is a 1996 graduate of Penn State University and has a dual bachelor's degree in journalism and Russian language. He is a member and past board member of the New York chapter of the Asian American Journalists Association and a graduate of AAJA's Executive Leadership Program.
Jodie Lau
Jodie Lau is a news copy editor at the Arizona Republic in Phoenix. She is serving as the interim assistant news editor and oversees an accuracy initiative for the copy desk. Jodie also is on the Republic's diversity committee. She is involved with the Asian American Journalists Association, working on the professional staff of AAJA Voices, the convention student newspaper. A graduate of Arizona State University, she worked at the Salt Lake Tribune in Utah for two years before moving back to her hometown.
Kathy Lu
Kathy Lu is the Neighbors editor at the Roanoke Times, a 95,000-circulation daily in southwest Virginia. Her responsibilities include managing a team of four reporters, one layout editor and freelancers, who write for a separate publication called the Lake. Both Neighbors and the Lake, which launched in May, are zoned weekly community news tabs. She has been at the Roanoke Times since 1997, after she graduated from Washington and Lee University as a journalism major. She covered education, nonprofits and social services before being appointed to this position in February.
Janell McGrew
Janell McGrew is a senior writer at the Montgomery (Ala.) Advertiser, where she covers politics and state government. She also has covered race relations and religion for the newspaper. Before coming to the Advertiser in 1999, she worked as an intern at various papers, including the St. Petersburg (Fla.) Times and the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, where she was responsible for covering general assignments. An Alabama native, Jannell received her journalism degree with honors from the University of Alabama and is a Chips Quinn Scholar.
Patricia Muñoz
Patricia Muñoz is the editor of Nuestra Comunidad, a Spanish-language Gannett weekly publication covering the Latino community in Central New Jersey. She was a reporter for the paper when it launched in June 2003, and has been editor since October 2003. Previously, Patricia worked as a copyreader at Dow Jones Newswires. A native of Argentina, she received her journalism degree from La Plata University in 1989. She worked in broadcasting production and as a concert producer, a radio producer, TV anchor and press secretary in the Angostura city hall. Her academic achievements include a post-degree investigation at Navarra University in Pamplona, Spain, and she was named by her hometown, Mar del Plata, as an honorific ambassador. She is married to Sebastian Nieto, an Argentinean chef, and has two daughters, Sophie, 10, and Emily, 6.
Simira Rizvi
Simira Rizvi is a copy editor in the Hearst Newspapers Fellowship Program, which includes three eight-month rotations at three different-sized Hearst newspapers around the country. She recently completed her second rotation at the Midland (Mich.) Daily News and started at the Albany (N.Y.) Times Union this month. Samira's first rotation was with the Houston Chronicle, where she worked previously as a Dow Jones copy editing intern and as a part-time copy editor. She is from Houston and received her journalism degree from the University of Houston.
Roland P. Sondia
Roland P. Sondia is operations manager in the circulation department of the Pacific Daily News in Guam. Roland, a lifelong resident of Guam, has been employed with the Gannett newspaper for 26 years. He has held positions including data entry clerk, senior systems technician and business systems manager. Roland was transferred to the circulation department in January. He plans to continue growing with the paper and hopes to become circulation director within five years. He is married and has two sons, ages 14 and 6.
Ushela Smith

Ushela Smith is a circulation sales manager for the Greenville (S.C.) News. She has been with paper for about four years. Before her recent promotion to sales manager, she was a telemarketing supervisor. She has worked in the area of sales for most of her life. Ushela and her husband of 11 years have four children, three boys and one girl.

 

Jessica Tims
Jessica Tims was named managing editor of her hometown newspaper, the Morning Sun in Pittsburg, Kan., in October. She is a May 2003 graduate of the William Allen White School of Journalism and Mass Communications at the University of Kansas. She started her career at the Morning Sun in June 2003 as a sports writer and moved to the political beat in January 2004. In college she was sports editor of the University Daily Kansan and covered stories from the Jayhawks' unsuccessful run at the NCAA basketball championship to the resignation of Coach Roy Williams and the hiring of Bill Self. Jessica and her rat terrier, Max, live in Frontenac, Kansas.
Iraini Williams

Iraini Williams is the customer retention manager at the Clarion Ledger in Jackson, Miss. She graduated from the University of Louisiana at Lafayette with a bachelor's degree in business administration and a concentration in management. Iraini started her career with the Clarion Ledger in 2003 as a customer service supervisor. Her career goal is to become director of a call center.
