BACKGROUND

Since 1985, MIJE has conducted the Maynard Management Program at Northwestern's Kellogg Graduate School of Management in Evanston, Ill. The program was developed under the guidance of an advisory committee of senior newspaper executives. It now ranks among the top newspaper management programs in the country.

MIJE created the program to increase the number of minority media managers in both editorial and business departments. The program has graduated hundreds of participants who now serve in the senior levels of their organizations as publishers, executives and managers.

The rigorous Maynard Management Program @ Kellogg immerses participants in financial management, budgeting, organizational behavior, human resources, advertising, marketing, business operations, editorial processes technology and its effects on news. Case studies help participants examine timely industry issues and trends.

Faculty from Northwestern's J.L. Kellogg Graduate School of Management and Medill School of Journalism join leading management consultants and newspaper executives in teaching and mentoring participants.

FEE AND EXPENSES

The total fee is $12,000. The fee covers the on-campus tuition and includes lodging, breakfast and lunch at Northwestern University.

Dinners are not included. Ten percent of the fee must accompany the application and is non-refundable; the remainder of the fee is due four weeks before the start of the program.

WHO SHOULD APPLY?

Newspaper managers from news, business and online departments, with a high potential for advancement. Company sponsorship is required.

While the Maynard Institute emphasizes participation by people of color, the program is open to all journalists.
